Program Standards 2010
The Learn to Sail Program is based on the highly successful Canadian Yachting Association's Learn to Sail Standards and accommodates a wide range of age and skill levels.

Opti Learn-to-sail
This is a two- week session for complete beginners or for students returning for the second year. The minimum age is 8 as of July 1st and the maximum is 13. The boats are designed for youngsters and we do not recommend anyone entering the Learn-to-sail program if they are over 150 lbs or taller than 5'6". A student is not limited to one session, someone returning for a second session will not have to start at square one again. The CYA Levels White Sail I & II can be achieved in the Opti Learn-to-sail program. The Opti LTS curriculum involves learning the basics, learning to skipper and handle a sailboat and acquiring the essential skills to do it safely. Program limited to 18 students per session per 2-week session. Boats are provided.

Opti Learn-to-race
The Opti Learn-to-race program has been a huge success in the past due to the rapid growth of the Optimist class racing in North America. The program provides an important step between Learn-to-sail and the Opti racing team. Candidates must have earned their White Sail II. The program is run in 12 club-owned, Optimists. The 4-week program takes the students through the basics of sailboat racing including advanced boat handling techniques, practice starts, short course racing and onland debriefing. Participants will be taught the CYA LTR curriculum. Maximum of 12 students per 4 week session.

Opti Race Team
This option is for the advanced Opti sailor who has completed their CYA LTR program.  We will limit the program to 8 students per session, in student-owned boats only. Students are encouraged to enter the program for the whole summer.

Basic Double Handed BDH
Those who have successfully passed CYA levels White Sail I & II may participate in the BDH Program with an emphasis on boat safety, sailing theory, boat handling and crewing.  The BDH Program is based on the White Sail III curriculum and the S.P.A.R.K. Start safe boating program.

Advanced Doubled Handed ADH
This double-handed program will be for candidates who have achieved their CYA White III and will teach advanced crew related skills such as trapeze and spinnaker work. The class will use 420's, and each candidate will be introduced to advanced racing, training and boat maintenance skills in anticipation of future enrollment in the B. Y. O. B. (bring your own boat) program. The Club strongly encourages participants enroll in the ADH Program for the entire season.

RStLYC Race Team (BYOB)
The Club racing team will concentrate almost exclusively on advanced boat handling and racing techniques.  Participants, with their own boats, will be intensively coached in a program that prepares the sailors for competition at a provincial/national level. There will be a fair amount of traveling but the schedule will be established well in advance. An early response by April1st will help the coaches customize individual goal setting and regatta schedules for all sailors.

General
The Canadian Yachting Association certification is included in the course fee, as students graduate from each level. Students must provide their own M. O. T. Certified PFD (personal floatation device) or life jacket, lace-up rubber soled shoes and should bring enough dry clothes to change into at the end of the day as well as a set of foul weather gear and sunscreen. Sailors should always dress in accordance to daily weather changes.

Sailing runs from 9:00 to 16:00 daily.  All students and parents will be asked to sign a behavioral code of conduct.  There will be Prize Giving ceremonies for all sailors and parents on July 16th and August 13th.  On both of the aforementioned dates, sailing will end at 1PM.

All participants are encouraged to become Junior Members of the RStLYC and to fully participate in the many facilities, including the pool and snack bar.

Conditions
1. All applications must be accompanied by payment in full by cheque or credit card, including RStLYC members.
2. All accepted registrations are subject to a $ 50 fee if cancellation is made prior to June 1st. No refunds will be given if cancellation is made after this date. There can be exceptions made, in the case of illness or injury, at the discretion of the Junior Sailing Director. Without any exceptions, there are NO REFUNDS ONCE THE SESSION IS UNDERWAY. The program hires its staff - its major cost - for the full 8 weeks and if a participant elects to be absent for ANY part of the session, there will be no consideration given for the period of absence.
3. A position on the waiting list is subject to a 'first come first served' basis.
4. Each group is subject to minimum enrollment.

Special note on travel
Students who will be traveling and attending out-of-town regattas on one of our teams will be responsible for their share of the travel costs and their own food and accommodation. These costs, and the venues, will be spelled out well before the start of the program at scheduled meetings with parents. For those who do not travel, for whatever reason, regular instruction at the Club will be available with the remaining groups. Students who will participate in regattas must be members of a CYA affiliated club. To avoid that last minute rush, join The Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club now. Call the office for an application form.
